As life develops consciousness it develops love, and love is necessarily the essential motive to survive; all other motives will self destruct. Before consciousness there is not a motive, there is just chance. It is true as in all the good stories, that love wins – because it creates something worth having. If the forces of greed and hate destroy this Eden what will they have won? Necessarily, nothing. And life will start again somewhere else, and love will try again to fulfil its potential.

Love, as part of nature, is the functioning of nature to appreciate beauty, to relieve suffering and to bring health and happiness. Where necessary and possible, love transforms things for this purpose. When harm is done because we are controlled by fear, anger or grief, it is only because love has not yet finished its work.

Sometimes life is like a labyrinth in which the cause of our distress is hidden. We have to find the cause, i.e. comprehend it, and thus learn how to manage it or remove it to release ourselves from the effects. That is the work of love. As well as enjoying all the good things, that is what love does.
